About the product
Pablo Picasso’s “Portrait of Dora Maar” is a celebrated and emotionally charged painting that vividly captures the complex personality of his mistress and fellow artist, Dora Maar. Painted during a turbulent period in their relationship and a time of global unrest (around 1937), this portrait embodies Picasso’s signature fragmented style, often reflecting the psychological turmoil of his subjects. Dora Maar is depicted seated in an armchair, her face rendered with multiple perspectives and distorted features, notably her piercing eyes and often tear-stained appearance. The vibrant and clashing colors—acidic yellows, deep purples, and stark blues—amplify the emotional intensity and discomfort. Despite the abstraction, Maar’s striking presence and inner turmoil are palpable. This painting is not merely a likeness but a profound psychological study, revealing Picasso’s deep engagement with the emotional landscape of his muse and the turbulent times they lived in.
