About the product
Pablo Picasso’s 1932 oil painting, Le Rêve (The Dream), is a vibrant and intimate portrait of his 22-year-old mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter, asleep in an armchair. This work is a quintessential example of Picasso’s Surrealist period, characterized by its fluid lines, bold colors, and distorted yet recognizable forms. Marie-Thérèse’s face is rendered with a striking combination of tenderness and abstraction, split down the middle as if showcasing both her conscious and subconscious states. The use of bright, contrasting hues of red, yellow, and green amplifies the dreamlike quality of the scene. Her relaxed posture and the serene expression on her face convey a sense of peaceful slumber, while the subtle hints of cubist fragmentation in her form remind the viewer of Picasso’s earlier explorations. “Le Rêve” is not just a portrait but a deep dive into the artist’s personal life and his ongoing fascination with the interplay between reality and the subconscious, making it a masterpiece that encapsulates both emotional depth and artistic innovation.
